What is a sponge cloth?
How long do sponge cloths last?
A sponge cloth is a flexible cloth that absorbs water and is ideal for washing up and cleaning. It's environmentally friendly, as it's made from natural materials instead of plastic: 70% cellulose and 30% cotton. You can even compost it! Simply cut it up into small pieces and add it to the compost heap. If you have a thermal composter, it will take 2-3 months; with garden compost, it can take up to 24 months.
That depends on how intensively you use it daily. Typically, a sponge cloth lasts several months to two years. If you use it daily, you should wash it at 60°C every five to seven days at the latest. This is important to prevent bacteria from forming. Wash it as soon as it starts to smell or discolor.
General tip: if you're wiping up tea, coffee, or tomato sauce, rinse the cloth with warm water afterward. This prevents the stains from drying in, and the cloth will stay looking great for a long time!
How do you wash sponge cloths?
It's that simple! To keep them hygienically clean, you should wash them regularly. This can be done either in a washing machine at 60°C or in the top rack of a dishwasher. Then let them dry thoroughly, ideally in the air or even in the sun. This also kills germs!
When should you replace the sponge cloth?
It depends on how often you use it. If you use the sponge cloth daily, you should replace it every few days. If you only use it occasionally, it will last a bit longer. But if the sponge cloth starts to smell strange or becomes discolored, throw it in the laundry! If it looks worn and even has holes, throw it in the compost!
